There was a plane crash on Polica on the 2nd of April 1969. The plane LOT An-24 SP-LFT flying from Warsaw to Cracow hit the northern hillside of Polica. All the passengers (53) died incuding a famous linguist Zenon Klemensiewcz. Poor visibility was the official reason of the crash, however there are other theories. It is a mystery why the plane hadn't landed in Cracow but flew further on to the south. The monument was constructed on the 40th anniversary of the tragedy.
