The memorial, which reminds people of a Polish botanist Hugon Zapałowicz (1852-1917), is situated on the building of the volunteer fire department station in Zawoja Przysłop. Zapałowicz created the first marked trail in the Polish part of the Western Beskids. This famous researcher set off on a round-the-world trip in 1888 and in 1905, when he retired, he moved to Zawoja. The same year a German mountain hostel was constructed at the top of Babia Góra. Thanks to Hugon Zapałowicz a Polish hostel was built on Markowe Szczawiny.
